In the recently published – together with the cover – article in Nature, the team of Prof. Bartosz Grzybowski described self-organizing, rotating chemical reactors that allow the execution of entire sequences of chemical reactions and/or complex extraction processes without the need for advanced chemical engineering methods. Reactors do not have physical walls or pipe systems and consist of concentric layers of fluids dynamically balanced by centrifugal forces. Reactors act as a multi-stage production line in which chemical compounds moving through successive layers undergo new and new transformations, finally producing drugs or purified components of mixtures.
