EdU (5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine) is an alkyne-functionalized proliferation probe that integrates into newly synthesized DNA for fluorescence imaging of cell proliferation using a click reaction with a fluorescent azide. The authors of the study used EdU as a Raman probe without requiring an azide reaction to track endothelial cell proliferation. The published results show that EdU imaging based on Raman spectroscopy is a new alternative to the fluorescence-based assay for the assessment of endothelial proliferation and regeneration.
